Tsunamis can be dangerous
for many hours after arrival, and the initial wave is not
necessarily the largest.

Source:
Lat: 36.1S<br And not that I would recommend staying in and Stumbling to find love, but it sure worked out for us.

I would have to credit my "Borrow A Boyfriend," Mr. Jeff Daly. A "Borrow A Boyfriend" is when your friends let their boyfriend come and help you with all that guy stuff. Computers, mechanical issues, getting a view into the mind of the testosterone laden gender, that kind of thing.

Jeff was especially gifted in the computer department and would insure I had the premium internet connection and the latest Beta Invites. After a tech stop Jeff had installed that StumbleUpon button in my browser and I was so immediately hooked on it that it became our inside joke. "Come out tonight Lisa you just can't stay home and Stumble." And when citing some new piece of information both Jeff and I would smirk and say "Oh I just Stumbled Upon it." And so when I told Jeff that I had met this guy on StumbleUpon he said "What?"

I had returned from teaching a Braille Class up on the Ventura County Community College campus to find a message in my inbox from NeonSurfer. I had seen that icon over and over. That big eyeball and unkempt brow I had been to his page. And now he sent me a message! My heart started to race and I walked around my one bedroom cottage pacing.

He asked if I was into Science Fiction and I said I love Star Trek. He asked if I surfed. I questioned "in the water ... with a board? Nobody actually surfs?"

He asked if I was into computers? And I said I was into dots. He asked "Can you be more vague?" And I thought, "Wow, can you be more condescending." (And yes he can be BTW.) And then I explained my name Dot-Girl. I was a Braille Transcriber, He was NeonSurfer, a neon tube bender turned wonk.

We spent about 6 months sharing links on StumbleUpon before we ever met. Our relationship escalated from our StumbleUpon avatars to email and then I allowed him to IM me. Thought it might have been a mistake at the time because man that guy can share links and keep em coming.

StumbleUpon gave us this chance to share who we were and what was important to us. That has grown to a way of life and our very business. We treasure the friends and connections that we find via these new conversational tools.

We keep running into people like us. The synchronicity and adventure grows. To be with someone with whom you share so much has been in indescribable gift and to be with someone who likes to explore and learn has given me the life I once only dreamed of.

Thank You StumbleUpon
XOXO

Lisa A. Nguyen and Maloney concluded that I was not in the Twitter search database. A search for my name, which is my Twitter ID, @LisaMcClure did not show up. Maloney showed how ParaTweet was used to project the Tweets. The Twitter API apparently could not pull my name up because I was not in the Twitter Search DataBase. The same was true of @Surfrider and Nguyen had discovered another individual involved in the forum with the same issue.

Origin of Twitter Questions
While we were not provided with the actual urls of the Twitter questions Maloney and Nguyen explained the process. Interns monitored the Twitter Stream, but not the Twitter stream projected on the wall in the forum. There was a time lag between the question being posted and the question being posed. There is also the possibility that the Tweet may not have made it to the projected Twitter stream in the forum.

Origin of YouTube Questions
The YouTube videos were actually shot by a Chapman University student. The call for YouTube questions went out and when there was no response students were asked to do some video interviews. These interviews are posted at the OCTA YouTube channel found at http://www.youtube.com/goOCTA

Here are the videos.
http://www.youtube.com/goOCTA#p/a/u/1/olf0pyejoso

http://www.youtube.com/goOCTA#p/a/u/2/Jqg0MggAZkQ

A Start on Some Suggested Guidelines
As tools of conversational media become more and more prominent features in public dialog we must all be aware of transparency issues and potential manipulation. This is my list of how I think a public form can take steps to ensure a democratic and representative process. I would like to invite more people to build on this list as we all have different experiences with the issues and technologies involved.

1. ParaTweet and other Projecting Software must be thoroughly tested.

2. If you have invited guests or representatives I suggest running their names through your software to insure their participation. If they do not appear you will know beforehand and either try to correct the issue or represent yourself under another account for the event. (a discovery!)

3. If there is going to be monitoring of a stream for a public forum make a clear list of qualifications for a Tweet to be excluded. This list should be publicly posted and possibly tweeted within the stream as a reminder from the moderator. I think this is really import for public forums intended to share voices, ask questions and hold public officials accountable as well as to allow for conversation.

4. The moderator of the stream should be announced along with the list of what could get you excluded and to provide a point of accountability. This is free speech and nothing to trifle with.

4. Asking for YouTube participation is great. But if your call gets no response I think it is better to say no one responded or be very clear about citing your source for clarity sake.

5. When calls for responses from video or prepared media from the public go out we want to somehow insure that those calls go out widely and in time for many different people to respond. And when those videos are used we want to see the links, the urls should be displayed.

Our Gratitute To Ted Nguyen and Ryan Maloney for sincerely taking time to discuss our concerns of Friday the Monday immediately following the event, as well as their pioneering work in the realm of conversational media. Changing how things are done isn't easy.

Using Twitter as a Forum for a hearing on transportation issues is a great solution. A larger amount of people can participate without traffic concerns, parking or other limitations. Not everyone can participate in a weekday event from 8 am to 7 pm, but we can certainly check our Twitter streams.

We want to ensure that engagement is democratic. We must be sure to include everyones voice and to invite more and more to join in the conversation.

Lisa A. The topic "Seeking Solutions To Address The State Transit Crisis."

For Transit Forum Update Click Here

We were invited to participate in the forum, to Tweet out to our followers information on the event and invite them to join in the conversation.

I was invited to a forum.
I was invited to be part of an audience and was asked use a #hashtag.
I was asked to have my followers join the conversation by using the same #hashtag.
But I wasn't represented.
My Tweets didn't show up in the Forum.
To me this was not a Transparent Forum

What is Transparent?

If you are going to use a #Hashtag ... then don't filter it at the forum, especially don't filter invited representatives from Social Media.

#Hashtags are an online convention that everyone might not be familiar with. At conferences and events when Twitter Streams are projected onto the screen by hashtags it is the audience being allowed to participate and share in the event without interrupting the event.

Hashtags can be abused and it is not unusual for Tweets to be monitored. Threats, foul language and inappropriate items are often siphoned off. But when it goes any farther in this it starts to look like censorship at worse and manipulation at best. Neither would be described as "Transparent."

From my observations the Twitter stream shown in the Forum and the one online differed tremendously and profoundly. New posts were streaming into Twitter while the stream within the Forum repeated and looped the same Tweets.

Audience Participation

If you are going to take questions from YouTube.com I want to see where they are posted? Where are these questions you are drawing from? I want the urls. I want to see it FROM YOUTUBE.COM.

Twitter, same thing, if you are taking questions from the Twitter stream I want to see where they are coming from. What are the questions from your constituents? I want the urls. I want to see it FROM TWITTER.COM.

SHOW ME YOUR TRANSPARENCY
Show me your Transparency. Show me it's not a plant. Show me I am being represented in this media and not just getting "Transparency-Washed" like "Green-Washing" when public places set out recycling receptacles just to dump it all in the same bin behind closed doors.

All that is required:
1. url of the YouTube Video
2. url of the Twitter question

Why?
Because its important. This is OUR Forum. Our chance to be heard. This is my chance to tell Sacramento I don't like how they spend my money.

In the afternoon I heard the moderator shut down the questions from participants.

Think I am whining now?
For Transit Forum Update Click Here

Lisa A. As a young adult I had health issues, they thought I had epilepsy and so I did not qualify for a drivers license. I have experienced the limitations of not having a car in Southern California. To make a trip from North Hollywood to Glendale to get an immunization took all day on public transportation. It actually would have been quicker for me to go to San Fransisco that day.

I argue that the need for local, immediate transportation is what will serve the constituents of California. I say that cutting the local bus services is a huge disservice. No, cutting local bus services is blatantly ignoring the needs of the public good and the demands of the future.

Gas prices are soaring with the promise to soar more. Job cuts, unemployment levels ... probably the car is going to go as well for a lot of these people. And then what is the biggest obstacle for their job hunt, their economic recovery? You think looking at wants ads in the newspaper is discouraging ... try cross checking with an available metro route, a metro route you can depend on to meet your work schedule.

Demographically speaking we have a huge generation of aging Baby Boomers. When adults are faced with the onset of legal blindness transportation issues loom even greater than literacy! How will I get around? How do I maintain my independence? How do I take care of myself?

The local transit system is the life and blood for many people to get basic needs cared for, to find work, to go to school, to get their children to the doctors.

Why are we cutting back on local buses and neighborhood solutions?

I don't need to get from Anaheim to LA in 20 Minutes. I need to get to work, to school, to the grocery store, to the doctors office. These are the transportation issues that need to be addressed. This is the infrastructure that people need. Below I have rewritten Pine's rules and replaced the value of authenticity with transparency. I would argue the same three rules apply if you choose to market your online presence as "transparent." Make sure you take a good long look in the mirror before you make that declaration.

1. Don't say you are transparent unless you really are transparent.

2. It's easier to be transparent if you don't say you are transparent.

3. If you say you are transparent ... you better be transparent.

If you say you are transparent and you are not you run the risk of appearing as a phony. Some may need a refresher in the wiki definition of transparency.

Lisa A.
